30th Annual Baile Funds Support Cancer Institute

Tri-City Hospital Foundation’s 30th annual Baile raised more than enough money to meet the initial capital expenses for the new Tri-City Medical Center Cancer Institute. The elegant, philanthropic event on Nov. 13 raised $374,450 from sponsors, ticket sales, cash donations and a live and silent auction. All of the proceeds raised will go toward the new Cancer Institute at Tri-City Medical Center. The Baile achieved its goal of raising all of money for the initial capital expenses to open the Cancer Institute in 2011.

“If we can save one life, if we can help one family, if we can make one bold move to reduce cancer, then the 2010 Baile will have been successful,” said Leanor Rappaport, honorary co-chair of this year’s Baile with husband Bernie.

The Tri-City Hospital Foundation is taking a leadership role in supporting the Cancer Institute. Tri-City Medical Center is the only “American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer” accredited facility in North County San Diego. Only 25 percent of facilities providing cancer care are nationally accredited by ACOS. The Cancer Institute plans to focus on prevalent cancers identified in the North County region, so it will establish an Accredited Breast Cancer Center.

This year’s Baile celebrated 30 years of philanthropic support to the Tri-City Medical Center. In those three decades, the Baile has helped Tri-City Medical Center create services and facilities that have provided exceptional health care for tens of thousands of North County residents.

In addition, the Foundation honored radiation oncologist Dr. Eva Lean at the Baile with the first ever Legacy Award, which honors those who exemplify humanitarian leadership values. “Dr. Eva Lean plays many roles in the medical community and the wider community. Compassionate physician. Philanthropist. Community leader. Fundraiser. Administrator. Volunteer,” said Tri-City Hospital Foundation Board Chair Craig Lindholm while awarding Dr. Lean at the Baile. “Many people ask, ‘How can I get more?’ Eva Lean asks, ‘How can I give more?’”

Dr. Lean has been part of the Tri-City Medical Center since 1989 and has served as medical director of the radiation oncology services since 1992. Dr. Lean also served for many years on the board of the Tri-City Hospital Foundation.

Tri-City Medical Center is a full-service hospital with physicians practicing in 60 specialties. The medical center is administered by the Tri-City Healthcare District, which includes most of Carlsbad, Oceanside and Vista. Tri-City Hospital Foundation is a link between the community and the hospital. Since its creation, the Foundation has raised over $39 million. Many of the hospital's most mission-critical facilities have been supported in whole or part by Foundation initiatives.
