Chairwoman Reno Wins Public Service Award

RoseMarie Reno, chairwoman of the Tri-City Healthcare District, has been named the recipient of the prestigious Public Service Award in recognition of her longstanding commitment to health-care issues and her dedication to the public good through leadership and community service.

Previous winners of the award, given annually by the California Hospital Association's Board of Trustees, include former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (2010) and former Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez (2007).

Mrs. Reno was honored at a reception last week for her quarter-century of service on the public hospital board -- she was first elected in 1984 -- and her 45 years as a California registered nurse. She has served tirelessly as a caregiver, educator, advocate and healthcare leader.

"As a board member of the Tri-City Healthcare District, including four terms at its chairwoman, Director Reno has led the hospital through numerous expansions and has developed expertise in design, operations and budgeting of healthcare services," said Dr. Steven Packer, California Hospital Association Chair-Elect, in presenting the award.

"Throughout her 25 years of service on the Tri-City Healthcare District Board of Directors, she has fought to maintain the public nature of Tri-City as the ‘community’s’ hospital," said Packer.

As an administrative nurse and educator, Mrs. Reno was able to pursue her lifelong passion of educating young nurses and improving patient care through advocacy.  For 28 years, she was a professor for the Licensed Vocational Nursing and Allied Health programs at MiraCosta College and placed special emphasis on patient and nurse safety and preparing nurses for leadership roles.

Director Reno has lobbied for healthcare initiatives through the American Hospital Association and has influenced important legislation that has improved nursing issues, patient care and healthcare delivery.

She has served with numerous associations that have given her the opportunity to have a voice in important public policy decisions, including the San Diego County Hospital Council, the Association of California Hospital Districts and the Beta Healthcare Group. She co-founded the Emergency Nurses Association of San Diego County.

"For 25 years, RoseMarie Reno has been a leading advocate for improving the delivery of health care to underserved populations in North San Diego County," said C. Duane Dauner, president/CEO of the California Hospital Association.
