RoseMarie Reno Named Trustee of the YearRoseMarie Reno

Recognition by Modern Healthcare

RoseMarie Reno was named Trustee of the Year by Modern Healthcare, a national publication that reports on the healthcare industry, in recognition of her more than four decades of service to Tri-City Healthcare District, Tri-City Medical Center and the North County community.

In announcing the award Tuesday, Modern Healthcare said:

“True leaders draw inspiration from difficult circumstances and prove their mettle with action and courage. Today, the remarkable trustees profiled on the following pages are living proof. They embrace the upheaval in healthcare organizations as they continue the strenuous journey toward patient-centered care. With 2013 promising another strong dose of turmoil in our industry, board members continue to champion change in the face of unrelenting pressure to reduce costs, maintain quality and protect patients. For this, they deserve our recognition and admiration.”

Mrs. Reno’s leadership and stewardship have helped to build a thriving medical center that is setting itself apart from its competitors in key quality-of-care measures, ensuring the community continues to have the best care there is to offer at a facility expressly committed to serving them, one of Mrs. Reno’s top priorities.

A registered nurse, Mrs. Reno served as head nurse of the hospital’s Emergency Department. She co-founded the Emergency Room Nurses Association of San Diego in 1970 to promote excellence in emergency nursing care.

She later became an educator and for 28 years she was a professor for the Licensed Vocational Nursing and Allied Health programs at MiraCosta Community College.

Ms. Reno, 83, was first elected to the Board of Directors in 1984 and voters have returned her to the governing board every year since.

Vista Mayor Judy Ritter told Modern Healthcare that Ms. Reno “has been a voice of reason on the board.

Mrs. Reno’s accomplishments and leadership have been recognized by her healthcare peers. She received awards for Public Service and Outstanding Leadership from the California Hospital Association. She also received the Outstanding Trustee Leadership award from Association of California Hospital Districts and was named a Public Health Champion by the County of San Diego for her “extraordinary achievements” in promoting the health of the community.

But awards don’t capture the passion, dedication and diligence Mrs. Reno has brought to the board – and the community.

“RoseMarie has been an unflinching advocate for the hospital and the community,” CEO Larry Anderson said. “I have never seen a trustee do the amount of work that she does. She loves the hospital. It is her life.”
Modern Healthcare received 65 nominations for the Trustee of the Year competition in four categories: large hospitals, those with 100 or more staffed beds, such as Tri-City Medical Center; small hospitals, those with fewer than 100 staffed beds; not-for-profit healthcare systems; and for-profit healthcare companies.

“It is indeed quite rewarding to be recognized as Trustee of the Year,” Mrs. Reno said. “It’s a reward I’ll treasure.”

Mrs. Reno said one of her greatest accomplishments was assuring the community they would have “a hospital they can turn to when in need.”
That is only possible through collaboration, she said.

“Board members should work together with the CEO and his team to make things happen, not just put strategic planning in a binder and put it on a shelf to think about next year,” she said.
