Orthopaedic Center: Osteoporosis Risk Factors

Osteoporosis is a progressive decrease in the density of bones that weakens bones and makes them more likely to fracture.

Preventing osteoporosis is more successful than treating it. Prevention involves maintaining or increasing bone density by including enough calcium and Vitamin D in your diet, engaging in weight-bearing exercise, and, in some cases, hormone replacement therapy.

Women are particularly at risk for osteoporosis, and we are now seeing an increased number of women in theirs 40s and 50's suffering from osteoporosis, due to eating disorders or poor nutrition at an early age.

Other contributing factors are:

  • Smoking

  • Early menopause

  • Excessive alcohol consumption

  • Lack of exercise

  • Insufficient calcium in diet

  • Family history of osteoporosis
