Tri-City Medical Center has offered driver training and evaluation services to patients and community members since 2001. The Program is the only one of its kind in San Diego's North County. The ability to drive for a person with disabilities or impairments can make the difference between being homebound/dependent and having independent access to the community for work, school, and recreation.
Adaptive driving services at Tri-City Medical Center include a clinic evaluation, behind-the-wheel evaluation and training, and driving safety class coordinated by a Certified Driver Rehab Specialist/licensed occupational therapist.
Drivers with medical concerns, disabilities or changes from aging may benefit from this service to determine driving readiness, the need for adaptive equipment (such as hand controls or spinner knob), or preparation for DMV testing after a medical event such as a stroke. If motor, cognitive or visual skills can be improved, a home program will be customized with physician referral and driver participation. For those unable to return to driving, resources for local alternate transportation will be provided.
Payment for services may be covered by insurance in some cases. A discount is offered for cash-pay services.
