Hip Arthroscopy

Two of the only surgeons in all of San Diego who perform hip arthroscopy are right here at Tri-City Medical Center – Dr. Andrew Cooperman and Dr. Harish Hosalkar. A small incision is made along with the use of a tiny camera and miniature surgical instruments to operate.

Dr. Cooperman says hip arthroscopy lets him diagnose and treat hip problems without detaching muscles, dislocating the hip or making large incisions.

To find out more about minimally invasive procedures for knee, hip, and spine problems call orthopedics and spine at 760.940.3000 or contact us by filling out our special patient form.

Minimally Invasive Surgery

This surgical technique allows doctors to make a small incision instead of a large one. Minimally invasive surgery can treat a variety of conditions, including the spine, hips and knees.

Benefits for patients include:

  • Less trauma to muscles
  • Faster recovery times
  • Reduced post-operative pain

New Take on Total Hip Replacement – Hana© Table

There’s a new ‘assistant’ in our operating room. It is the Hana© table. This operating table gives surgeons another option for hip replacement – the anterior approach.

Anterior approach means surgeons replace the hip through an incision in the front of the hip. In a traditional hip replacement operation the incision is made in the back.

Reaching the hip from the front helps patients with:

  • Shorter hospital stays – perhaps as short as one day
  • Quicker recovery times
  • Less movement restriction
  • Lowered risk of hip dislocation and other complications

A number of surgeons at Tri-City Medical Center are using the Hana© table, including Dr. David Amory and Dr. Andrew Cooperman. Talk to your doctor to find out if this is the right surgery for you, or call us to talk with our experts about hip replacement and orthopedic services.

Resurface Instead of Replace – Ideal for Younger Patients

Hip pain can keep you from doing the things you enjoy. It can also make everyday activities like walking and sitting very painful.

Hip replacement is a good option for many patients. But if you are under 60 and active and have severe hip problems you may benefit from a procedure called the Birmingham Hip. It’s one of the latest advances in orthopedic surgery.

Birmingham Hip Resurfacing is available at our orthopedics and spine. “It involves resurfacing the hip instead of replacing it. It saves more bone, leading to quicker recovery time,” says Dr. Helgager, a specialist in the procedure.

Hip resurfacing is often a perfect choice for younger patients who may wear out an artificial hip when they still have many years of activity ahead of them.

Vitamin E Knee Replacement

The need for joint replacement can happen at any age. Active people are requiring knee replacements at a younger age and living longer. It’s increasingly important to use strong, lasting materials in joint replacement.

E+™ Vitamin E Knee – Blended to Move You

A new advanced total knee replacement device called the E+™ is now available. Tri-City Medical Center performed the first surgery in San Diego County using this innovation in July 2012.

E+™ is an innovative polyethylene blended with vitamin E, a natural anti-oxidant. Vitamin E is blended right into the resin used for the device. This insert has been created for the 3DKnee™, a knee replacement designed to improve strength, stability and flexion.

Stronger, longer life for devices

Adding vitamin E will help the material hold up to the expectations of today’s active patient.
Polyethylene wear is a weak point in total knee replacements. Vitamin E improves the material’s tensile strength while preventing polyethylene degenerating oxidation.

Shoulder Replacement Surgery

Joint replacement surgery helps people of all ages live pain-free, active lives. Shoulder replacement (arthroplasty) is a procedure that may be recommended if joint disease (arthritis) makes your shoulder stiff and painful.

Quality Measures

The high quality of our orthopedic services is reflected in its numbers. According to several criteria, care for surgical patients treated at Tri-City Medical Center outpaced care at other hospitals in California in the following areas:
