Meet Mey Phiri in Transfusion Medicine.

What does transfusion medicine do?

Transfusion medicine is responsible for collecting and testing blood distributed to patients to ensure each patient receives blood compatible with their unique body. In addition, they issue tissue for surgery, investigate transfusion reactions and respond to any demand for blood or blood products during an emergency and massive transfusion protocols.

What are the educational requirements to be in this field?

To be a Clinical Laboratory Scientist, one should earn a bachelor’s degree in a science major or medical science and gain state licensure depending on their state. California certainly requires one.

How long have you been working at Tri-City Medical Center?

I’ve been here for five months, and I’ve enjoyed working here.

Why do you like working at Tri-City Medical Center?

I work in a lab with a sound support system top-down from the management and my coworkers. Everyone is very knowledgeable about what they do, and the camaraderie from every one of them shows the love and support not only for each other but also for our patients. We treat our patients as if they are our family. I would never hesitate to bring myself or my family and friends to Tri-City Medical Center.

 

 


Meet Scott Moon in Histology.

What does histology do?

Preparing tissue is particular and essential for the proper evaluation and diagnosis from the pathologist. In histology, we prepare tissue samples for pathologists. We work with many different tissue types, from an appendix to a colon or lung tissue.

What are the educational requirements to be in this field?

For a histology technician, you must have an associate’s in biology. For a licensed histotechnicnologist, you must have a bachelor’s in biology or chemistry. You must also possess a certification from an accredited program from a National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) or Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation (CAHEA).

How long have you been working at Tri-City Medical Center?

I have been with Tri-City Medical Center for 30 years.

Why do you like working at Tri-City Medical Center?

In addition to the fantastic benefits package, Tri-City offers, I also enjoy my coworkers. I have built great relationships with my coworkers.

 


Meet Regin Ortiz in Laboratory Information Systems.

What do laboratory Information systems do?

The Laboratory Information system section of the lab provides integration and connection between laboratory science and information technology. We create efficient processes, streamlined workflow, greater regulatory compliance, high-quality results and better reporting capabilities to meet the hospital’s needs for the best possible patient care.

What are the educational requirements to be in this field?

I have graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology and a Master of Health Administration with a concentration in informatics.

How long have you been working at Tri-City Medical Center?

I have been working at Tri-City since 2018.

Meet Dr. Ubong Usua in Microbiology.

What does Microbiology do?

Microbiology plays a crucial role in effective infection prevention and control. Microbiology works on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases. For instance, microbiology provides results for COVID-19 testing. Microbiologists devote their career to culturing, examining and identifying microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, yeasts, viruses, etc.

What are the educational requirements to be in this field?

To become a microbiologist, you need a bachelor’s degree in life sciences, attend a technical school to become a clinical lab scientist, a certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) and a California License.

I took my education a step further and completed my Doctorate in Public Health while working full-time.

How long have you been working at Tri-City Medical Center?

I started in January.

Why do you like working at Tri-City Medical Center?

I like working at Tri-City because we work as a team and are cohesive. It doesn’t matter what section of the lab you work in, and everyone supports each other. In addition, everyone is cheerful and loves what they do, which makes coming to work a joy.

 


Meet Darlene Raleigh in Phlebotomy.

What does phlebotomy do?

Phlebotomists collect physician-ordered blood samples for analysis. Phlebotomists need to know what to collect, how to collect, why they collect samples and how to handle specimens to ensure accurate testing and results. Every day can look different for phlebotomists. They must be adaptable and work in various settings, from the lab to the bedside.

What are the educational requirements to be in this field?

Phlebotomists must be state-certified. They also require class time for education and practice and complete a state board exam.

How long have you been working at Tri-City Medical Center?

I have been working for Tri-City since 2005.

Why do you like working at Tri-City Medical Center?

What I like most are my colleagues. They care a lot about the outcomes of patients and care deeply about the work they do.

 


Meet Evelyn Ortiz-Vazquez in Chemistry.

What does chemistry do?

Clinical chemists use chemistry to evaluate patient health. They evaluate blood, DNA, tissue, fluids and cells. Their evaluations help monitor medications and assess the functionality of organs, among other functions. In addition to evaluating samples, chemists are responsible for maintaining the machines used.

What are the educational requirements to be in this field?

To be a chemist, you must have a bachelor’s in science, a certification as a medical technologist or clinical lab scientist, a certificate from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) and a California License.

How long have you been working at Tri-City Medical Center?

I have worked at Tri-City for ten years.

Why do you like working at Tri-City Medical Center?

I love what I do. I love to assist physicians and nurses in helping patients. Our society has been through so much lately, but we still move forward and help our patients through the challenges.

 


Meet Jane Bossart in Hemology.

What does hematology do?

Hematology prepares, tests and analyzes blood and blood diseases. They examine and diagnose blood disorders and malignancies, including hemophilia, blood clots, leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma and sickle-cell anemia. 

What are the educational requirements to be in this field?

You must have a bachelor’s degree and a one-year internship at Clinical Laboratory Scientist school and pass the state exam.

How long have you been working at Tri-City Medical Center?

I have worked at Tri-City since 1989 – for 33 years.

Why do you like working at Tri-City Medical Center?

We are a close-knit community here. And I enjoy making an impact in my local community.
