Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Surgery

Gastric-Bypass-Image-2014Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) is a type of weight loss surgery that greatly reduces the size of your stomach to a small pouch about the size of an egg. During the gastric bypass procedure, a small pouch is created by separating a small section of the stomach away from the rest of the stomach. The intestine is then connected to the newly formed pouch, preventing/10 food from entering the larger part of the stomach. Thus, after gastric bypass, food travels into the pouch and then directly into the intestine. Weight loss occurs due to the decreased capacity of the stomach to hold food as well as mild malabsorption of food.

The RYGB procedure can be done either as an open surgery, with a large incision on the abdomen, or via laparoscopic using small entry points where a tiny camera (a laparoscope) is inserted along with other tools to complete the surgery. Depending on your situation, your doctor may prefer conducting a laparoscopic procedure as it often results in a shorter hospital stay and leads to less pain, smaller scars, and a quicker recovery.
