Da Vinci® Surgical Robot will perform minimally invasive procedures, bringing high tech efficiency to the operating room
OCEANSIDE, June 23 – Continuing its mission to advance the health and wellness in the community, the Tri‐City Hospital Foundation has committed to raise $1.5 million toward the purchase of a da Vinci Si Robotic Surgical System. This breakthrough surgical technology allows surgeons to perform minimally invasive procedures using a 3D high definition camera head, fingertip controls, surgical dexterity and precision far greater than even the human hand. Tri‐City Medical Center will be the only hospital in north San Diego County with the newest version of this cutting edge technology.
“There are many benefits to performing surgery through this piece of equipment,” said Tobi Ferguson, the Foundation’s chief executive officer, “including significantly less pain, shorter hospital stays, less risk of infection and faster recovery. This new piece of equipment will benefit all programs and patients of Tri‐City Medical Center, but it will particularly benefit Tri‐City Medical Center’s Cancer, Cardiovascular and Women’s Health centers.”
Together, these technological advancements provide the hospital’s surgeons with unparalleled precision, dexterity and control that enable a minimally invasive approach for many complex surgical procedures, ranging from bladder cancer to kidney disorders to thyroid cancer.
The Foundation’s $1.5 million will be augmented by Tri‐City Medical Center to complete the $2.6 million price tag for the surgical system. Furthermore, funds from the Aug. 4, 2011 Charity Reception at the Mercury Insurance Open Presented by Tri‐City Medical Center women’s tennis event at La Costa Resort and Spa will support this initiative. It is an ideal match since the robotic surgery is a primary surgical intervention for women’s health.
“With this great new addition to the Medical Center, the Foundation is launching a capital campaign to challenge the community to help fund innovations such as this,” said Craig Lindholm, Foundation chairman.
In a message of thanks to the Tri‐City Hospital Foundation, Larry Anderson, CEO of Tri‐City Medical Center, said, “We are committed to creating a robotic surgery program ‘second to none’ in San Diego County. We are already identifying both surgeon and clinical support staff champions to ensure a successful launch of our da Vinci Si program.”
Tri‐City Medical Center is a full‐service hospital with physicians practicing in 60 specialties. The medical center is administered by the Tri‐City Healthcare District, which includes most of Carlsbad, Oceanside and Vista.
Tri‐City Hospital Foundation is a link between the community and the hospital. Since its creation, the Foundation has raised over $40 million. Many of the hospital’s most mission‐critical facilities have been supported in whole or part by Foundation initiatives.
