Premier Mazor Robotic Technology Purchased by Tri-City

Tri-City Medical Center is now the only hospital in San Diego County — and only the ninth nationwide — to own the Mazor Robotics Renaissance™ System, a surgical guidance system for spinal surgeries.

This premier technology allows surgeons to create a detailed blueprint of the patient’s spine prior to surgery and calibrate – with up to 98 percent accuracy – where the implants will go. The only other hospital in California with this system is the University of California, Irvine.

Tri-City’s purchase of the Mazor Renaissance™ system demonstrates its commitment to be the regional leader for robotics and technology. The hospital, with help from the Tri-City Hospital Foundation, last December purchased the da Vinci® Surgical System.

In addition, the hospital uses Brain Lab© – an image-guided software program designed for complex and routine procedures. Tri-City plans to enhance its Brain Lab technology with the purchase of two Digital Lightboxes, one of which will be equipped with software that allows surgeons to create 3-D images of the brain.

All these technologies advance minimally invasive techniques that help surgeons work more efficiently and with greater precision, while patients get smaller incisions and a faster recovery.

“Tri-City is building a future for the community and that future will include the best technology has to offer,” said Chief Executive Officer Larry Anderson.

The robots, Anderson said, are changing the surgical landscape and Tri-City Medical Center is emerging as the dominant force in North County. “We intend to become the regional hub of robotically integrated surgical procedures.”

Tri-City’s orthopedic specialists Dr. Neville Alleyne and Dr. Payam Moazzaz traveled to the Texas Back Institute to evaluate and observe the robot.

“The introduction of this impressive technology will create a significant shift in our approach to spinal surgeries,” Dr. Alleyne said.

The Mazor is important for another reason: it minimizes the exposure to radiation for the patient and the doctor. Typically, a doctor takes multiple X-rays after each implant. That’s unnecessary with the Mazor.
